EXCERPT:
Before I knew it, he pulled me to him and kissed me. Despite the confusion I felt, I kissed him back, wrapping my arms around his neck. I’d never felt such passion in a kiss and it took my breath away. We stayed locked together for what seemed like an eternity. Even though I was in danger for my life, I felt strangely safe and secure.
Balan broke away from me, breathing heavily. “We cannot stay here. It is not safe. You must come with me. I am risking my life to save you, but this is what I must do.” He stood, pulling me up against him.
“We need to leave here. I know of a house in the city where we can go for a short time, where they won’t look for us, at least at first. Then, tomorrow, we can make plans for the future.”
The future? All of this was making my head spin. But I did understand that to leave here was the only way to keep from becoming a sacrificial lamb. And to leave, I would need to cover my blonde hair, the one sure thing that made me look so much different than every black-haired Mayan woman in the city. The only thing I could think was to grab a length of cloth and drape it over my head, shawl-like. Balan looked down at me.
“You’re not going to fool anyone for very long with that.” He took the cloth and wrapped it in something resembling a turban. “Come, we need to leave. Someone will be coming to find out why I have not returned with you for the ceremony.”
